The short answer: no. GTA 6 is current-gen only. This guide explains why, and what it means for you if you're still on PS4 or Xbox One.
GTA 6 has only been announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X. No PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, or Xbox One X version has been announced by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive as of today. If you own a last-gen console and want to play GTA 6 at launch, here's what you need to know.
Rockstar has not announced any online mode for GTA 6: the game is described as "a single player experience". The community still calls a hypothetical multiplayer mode GTA Online 2. This guide uses that shorthand for convenience; it is neither an official name nor an announced product. GTA Online 2 is an unofficial community name.
Rockstar Games has presented GTA 6 exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in its official communications (trailer on the Rockstar Newswire, Take-Two earnings call of May 2026). No Rockstar or Take-Two communication mentions a PS4 or Xbox One version. This situation can only change through an official Rockstar announcement.
This is a clean break from GTA V in 2013, which launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 before coming to PS4 and PC. Rockstar positioned GTA 6 as a current-gen game from Trailer 1 in December 2023. The release date is November 19, 2026.
Rockstar Games published GTA 6's target platforms on the official Newswire: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No mention of PS4, Xbox One, or PC. No PC version has been announced.
If GTA 6 ever got an online component, it would sit inside the game: nothing separate has been announced for last-gen. Since GTA 6 is not announced on PS4 or Xbox One, no online component is either.
Rockstar has given no technical reasons; it has only announced platforms. The gap we see between a 2013 console (mechanical hard drive, 8 GB of shared RAM on PS4) and the rendering Digital Foundry observed on the base PS5 (ray-traced reflections and lighting, 1440p upscaled to 4K) is our own reading, not a Rockstar statement.
Rockstar has not said whether a PS4 or Xbox One version was ever considered.
Rockstar has announced no online mode for GTA 6, at launch or later. The game is described as "a single player experience". There is no GTA Online 2 launch date because there is no announced GTA Online 2.
GTA 6 launches in single-player only on November 19, 2026. For everything we know about the timeline and business model of GTA Online 2, the full guide is here: everything we know about GTA Online 2.
Crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for GTA Online 2 has not been confirmed or denied by Rockstar Games as of today. This is a frequently asked question across forums and fan communities, but no official Rockstar communication addresses it.
The GTA Online precedent on GTA V can inform the question: GTA Online on PS4 and Xbox One did not have crossplay between the two platforms. The gaming market has changed since 2013: Fortnite, Call of Duty, and several major titles now offer crossplay by default. Rockstar could follow this trend, but nothing confirms it at this stage.
If crossplay is announced, this page will be updated. Based on current official announcements: unknown.
If you're still on PS4 or Xbox One and want to play GTA 6 at launch, a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S is required based on current announcements. Two main options:
The PS5 is the console the Extended Look was captured on, and the only one whose performance has been analysed so far. For the GTA 6 preorder guide on PS5: preorder GTA 6 on PS5.
The Xbox Series X is Microsoft's alternative, with GTA 6 announced at the same store price. For the preorder guide on Xbox: preorder GTA 6 on Xbox Series X.
