GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Four consoles are in play: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The question is no longer "PS5 or Xbox" but "which of these four fits your situation and budget?"
This comparison separates what is published from what is not. PlayStation prices come from Sony, Xbox prices from the specialist press, and performance figures come from a single independent analysis.

Performance: what is measured, what is not
Rockstar has not published a technical sheet for GTA 6: no resolution, no frame rate, no per-console mode. The only measurement available is an independent analysis by Digital Foundry, published on August 28, 2026 from the Extended Look, captured on a base PS5.
PS5 Pro: a label, no data
The PlayStation Store listing carries a PS5 Pro optimization label, with no resolution, no frame rate and no mode details. According to Digital Foundry, we will have to wait until Sony or Rockstar show PS5 Pro footage. Nothing has been announced about frame rate or an upscaling technology for this console.
PS5 and Xbox Series X: one measurement, on PS5
On a base PS5, Digital Foundry reports 1440p internal rendering, scaled to 4K with a spatial upscale, and a relatively stable 30 frames per second; according to its analysis, the game targets 30 fps. People speaking to Rockstar, cited by Digital Foundry, say higher frame-rate modes will be considered for post-launch updates, but the outlet calls 60 fps on console "extremely unlikely".
For the Xbox Series X, no figure has been published: the Xbox Store listing marks the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S, nothing more. Any rendering comparison between the two brands is a guess. On hardware only, the PS5 SSD is rated at 5.5 GB/s against 2.4 GB/s for the Series X (raw manufacturer figures); no GTA 6 loading time has been measured.
Xbox Series S: native target, no measurement
The Series S is one of the consoles the game targets (same Xbox Series X|S mention). No resolution, frame rate or ray tracing data has been published for it. Any number you read elsewhere is an estimate, not a measurement.

The controller: PS5 wins (all versions)
Whichever PS5 you pick (disc drive, Digital or Pro), the DualSense is included. It packs two technologies the Xbox controller does not have:
- Haptic feedback: fine vibrations that change with the action
- Adaptive triggers: variable resistance under your fingers
For GTA 6, the PlayStation Store listing says vibration and trigger effects are supported. Rockstar does not detail what the game does with them. The Xbox controller has its own vibration, including in the triggers, but no variable-resistance triggers.
Controller verdict
PS5 wins on hardware (all versions). The DualSense does what the Xbox controller does not. What GTA 6 makes of it, nobody has shown yet.
The ecosystem: stick with what you have
If your game library, your controllers or your subscription already sit on one side, stay there. Switching consoles for GTA 6 means rebuilding a library from scratch.
For this game, friends are not a deciding factor: Rockstar presents GTA 6 as a single-player experience, and no online mode has been announced. GTA 6 has not been announced for Game Pass or PS Plus either.

- You already own an Xbox Series X or S: keep it, it is a native target for the game.

Console and GTA 6 pricing
GTA 6 comes in two editions: Standard at 79.99 EUR and Ultimate at 99.99 EUR (French PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings). Digital pre-orders have been open since June 25, 2026.
Consoles went up in 2026: the PS5 on April 2, the Xbox models by 150 to 200 EUR on August 1 (Europe). The prices in the table above and in the verdict below are list prices in euros for Europe, to check with the retailer at the time of purchase.
The GTA 6 box holds only a download code, no disc, so it also works on a console without a disc drive (PS5 Digital, Series S, Series X Digital), subject to the account region.
Final verdict: which one to pick?
Whichever verdict you land on, the price of GTA 6 does not depend on the console: 79.99 USD and 99.99 USD in Rockstar's June 24, 2026 announcement, 79.99 EUR and 99.99 EUR on the French listings. Only the console price shifts the final call. And on PS5, the DualSense remains the most concrete hardware argument: haptic feedback, adaptive triggers.

Is the PS5 Pro upgrade worth it for GTA 6?
Too early to say. The PlayStation Store listing carries a PS5 Pro optimization label, with no resolution, frame rate or mode details, and Digital Foundry says we will have to wait until Sony or Rockstar show PS5 Pro footage. The extra cost is known: 899.99 EUR versus 649.99 EUR for the PS5 with a disc drive, 250 EUR more (manufacturer prices in Europe, to check at the time of purchase). If you are starting fresh, you can wait for PS5 Pro footage before deciding.
Will GTA 6 come to PC?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version: only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are planned. For context, GTA V reached PC about 19 months after consoles (September 2013, then April 2015) and Red Dead Redemption 2 about 12 months after (October 2018, then November 2019); those precedents say nothing about GTA 6.
Physical or digital edition?
The box contains no disc: it holds a download code. The code is tied to the account region; according to the PS5 listing on Amazon.fr, it works on a PlayStation account from France or about 30 other countries. On timing, the gap is small: digital copies can be preloaded from November 12, 2026, and the box is available the same day to support preloading. As of October 3, 2026, the boxed listing on Amazon.fr is unavailable; digital remains open on the official stores.
What is the price of GTA 6?
Standard is 79.99 EUR and Ultimate 99.99 EUR on the French PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings (79.99 USD and 99.99 USD in the June 24, 2026 announcement). Digital pre-orders have been open since June 25, 2026.
